The eagerly awaited 18th International Architecture Exhibition entitled The Laboratory of the Future, curated by Lesley Lokko and organized by the Biennale di Venezia, is proposed in 2023 as an architecture exhibition which constitutes at the same time a moment and a process of general change, borrowing the structure and format of an art exhibition, but distinguishing itself from it for numerous critical aspects that most of the time go unnoticed. The major exhibition intends to tell a story with many voices, also dealing with issues related to production, resources and representation, making architects and creatives of African origin protagonists of this sui generis Biennale, often linked to the so-called diaspora, which determined the emergence of a fluid and interconnected culture whose diffusion is global. The Laboratory of the Future develops in six sections that host 64 National Participants with their exhibitions located among the pavilions in the Giardini, the Arsenale and in the historic center of Venice and offers a very rich agenda of appointments including Carnival, the calendar of public appointments, conferences, round tables, films and performances dedicated to the different insights such as a sort of free space open to all, the Special Project at the Applied Arts Pavilion (Arsenale) entitled Tropical Modernism: Architecture and Power in West Africa, the Biennale Sessions project, the Guided Paths and the Laboratory Activities, among many others.
