AFRICA 1:1. Five African Artists at Ca' Pesaro

The exhibition hosted at the Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna in Venice is the result of the project conceived by AKKA Project, Africa First and Ca' Pesaro which, in harmony with the 18th Architecture Biennale 2023, gave birth to AFRICA 1:1 LAB, Artists Residency Program, an artist residency project which led 5 young African artists to confront themselves with the Venetian artistic environment and, at the same time, to present their own original creative contribution to the Lagoon city. The five artists in residence - Option Nyahunzvi (Zimbabwe, 1992), Pamela Enyonu (Uganda, 1985), Alexandre Kyungu (DRC, 1992), Boniface Maina (Kenya, 1987) and Ngugi Waweru (Kenya, 1987) have constructed unprecedented dialogues with the visual tradition of the city and with the history of the Palace on the Grand Canal through the study of the history of the Gallery, of the original documents and of the works of the Masters conserved in the Permanent Collection.
