Canaletto & Venice

Giambattista Tiepolo, Allegory with Venus and Time, Oil on canvas, 190.4 x 292 cm, London, The National Gallery

Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, is the protagonist of a full-fledged exhibition dedicated to the Venetian '700, an artistic period rich in complexity and exceptional personality both in painting, both in sculpture and in decorative arts. From the views of Luca Carlevarijs to the innovative portraits of Rosalba Carriera, from the new compositions of Giambattista Tiepolo to the light-flooded canvases of Canaletto, from the custome scenes of Pietro Longhi to the pictorial "whims" of Giambattista Piranesi, from the last portraits of the Serenissima by Francesco Guardi and Giandomenico Tiepolo to the Neoclassicism by Antonio Canova, the Age of Enlightenment sees the Republic of Venice and its artists protagonists in Europe, while also the glassmaking art of Murano lives a golden season, together with the goldsmithery and the manufacture of porcelains.
