On the edge of memory: Photography at Palazzo Fortuny

Joan Fontcuberta. Dust Culture - Trauma #3191, 2022

Joan Fontcuberta. Dust Culture is the inaugural exhibition of the new exhibition season of the Fortuny Museum in Venice, which for the occasion hosts twelve artist light boxes signed by Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955), known as one of the most authoritative personalities in the photography contemporary scene. The start of the multidisciplinary career of Fontcuberta, artist, teacher, essayist, curator and writer, dates back to the 1970s alongside his artistic research and various commitments in the teaching, theoretical and curatorial fields. The Venetian exhibition is the result of the Catalan artist's dialogue with the extraordinary historical collections of the ICCD in Rome - an Institute founded at the end of the nineteenth century as a Photographic Cabinet to document the cultural heritage for protection and cataloging purposes - and, beyond the common nationality between the artist and Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, mainly evokes the profound bond of this place with photography, from the experiments of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo to his very rich archive preserved here, up to the transformation of the Palace into an avant-garde center of photography in the Seventies and Eighties.
