The Renaissance in the Family: Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, Masterpieces Compared

Giovanni Bellini, Madonna con Bambino (Madonna Trivulzio), About 1460, Milan, Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, Inv. 542

As part of the Nelle Gallerie program, the Venice Academy welcomes a precious early painting by Giovanni Bellini from the Pinacoteca of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the Madonna and Child, also known as the Trivulzio Madonna. The guest of honor is hosted in Room III, next to the Blessing Madonna and Child with Cherubs by Jacopo Bellini, one of the treasures of the Permanent Collection of the Galleries, whose recent restoration has revealed a surprising renewed splendour. Among brilliant flashes of azurite and crackling sparks of red-gold, the two Madonnas weave a new story under the sign of the exchange of works between the Venetian institution and other museums in Italy and elsewhere, giving life to new stories that speak of art all round.
