Upward

Vasily Kandinsky, Upward (Empor), 1929 Oil on paper, 70 x 49 cm,  Venice, Peggy Guggenheim Collection

This work was created in 1929 when Kandinsky was already teaching at the Weimar Bauhaus, and is constructed with geometric and semicircular forms on a background of green and turquoise which, split down the vertical line, gives the painting its upward direction. The two shapes form the letter "E", which is probably an allusion to the original title of the painting, Empor.
